Christian Hackenberg Waived By Oakland Raiders

Hackenberg’s NFL career appears to be in jeopardy.

Just three weeks after being traded to the Oakland Raiders for a conditional 7th round draft pick, the Raiders have already decided to cut Christian Hackenberg, according to Field Yates.

Because the Raiders cut Hackenberg so quickly, Oakland will now get to keep the conditional 7th round pick they traded for Hackenberg, meaning the Jets gave away their 2016 2nd round selection for free.

While I’m sure Hackenberg will get another chance this summer with another NFL team, it looks very much likely that his NFL career (as far as, you know, making a team) is essentially over. For the Raiders to have come to a decision this quickly on Hackenberg shows you where he’s at in regards to being a legitimate NFL quarterback, and doesn’t bode well for his future in the league.

With Hackenberg having just turned 23 this past February, there’s a chance he looks to keep his career alive for a bit longer, with the CFL being an option. But if he does decide to hang up the cleats, a career in the coaching ranks could be Hackenberg’s move. He’s mentioned in the past that he wanted to be a coach when his playing career ends, and he’d probably have a lot of suitors as a GA at a number of schools.
