On Monday, Trace McSorley was listed to the initial Maxwell Award watch list, given annually to the nation’s best player. One day later, McSorley has been listed on the Davey O’Brien watch list, given to the nation’s top quarterback.
This should come as no surprise, as McSorley has often mentioned as one of the nation’s best quarterbacks, if not THE best quarterback, heading into the 2018 season.
McSorley is in the process of completely re-writing the Penn State record books. Heading into his senior season, he has thrown for the most touchdowns in school history, and has had the two best single seasons in terms of passing yards. McSorley should also surpass Christian Hackenberg for most total passing yards this September. In 2017, McSorley connected on 66.5 percent of his passes, throwing for 3,570 yards and 28 touchdowns, with 10 interceptions. He also added 491 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground.
Baker Mayfield was the recipient of the Davey O’Brien Award in 2017, before going on to win the Heisman and becoming the #1 overall selection in the NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. May God have mercy on his soul.
