Redshirt Report: Separating From The Pack

NCAA Football: Penn State at Maryland Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

As Penn State enters game number two of its Big Ten slate, redshirts will begin to be burned. Here’s where things stand heading into Purdue:

4 Games Played

  • LB Brandon Smith
  • RB Devyn Ford
  • RB Noah Cain
  • CB Keaton Ellis
  • S Jaquan Brisker

3 Games Played

  • DE Adisa Isaac
  • OT Caedan Wallace
  • LB Lance Dixon

2 Games Played

  • CB Joey Porter Jr.

1 Game Played

  • OG Saleem Wormley
  • TE Brenton Strange
  • DE Smith Vilbert
  • OL Anthony Whigan
  • DT D’Von Ellies

0 Games Played

  • WR John Dunmore
  • S Tyler Rudolph
  • QB Taquan Roberson
  • DT Hakeem Beamon
  • QB Michael Johnson Jr.
  • CB Marquis Wilson
  • WR TJ Jones
  • DT Joseph Darkwa
  • CB Daequan Hardy

As always, some thoughts:

  • The four games folks are pretty clear cut — they should all see their redshirt burned this weekend against Purdue. Ford, Cain, Ellis, and Brisker are all clear rotation pieces, while Smith — despite a strong linebacker group around him — should see more and more time.
  • James Franklin mentioned Caedan Wallace and Lance Dixon by name at his press conference yesterday, saying that both are in the “yellow” light category. So barring something unforeseen, both should be headed for a redshirt. I imagine that’s also the case with Adisa Isaac, who didn’t play against Pitt but saw time against Maryland.
  • Joey Porter Jr. broke into the rotation against Maryland so we’ll see if there’s something there down the road. I would guess he’s a yellow right now just like the Dixon, Wallace, and Isaac, but regardless, nice to see that Porter Jr. is impressing enough to even be in the conversation.
  • D’Von Ellies and Anthony Whigan made their Penn State debuts against Maryland this past Saturday. Don’t think it means much going forward, but like Porter Jr., always nice to see guys breakthrough for some playing time.
