Penn State Basketball Ranked 23rd in AP Poll, 18th in NET

The Nittany Lions crack the AP poll for the first time since 1996

NCAA Basketball: Maryland at Penn State Matthew O’Haren-USA TODAY Sports

After a 23-year long drought, Penn State’s men’s basketball team is finally ranked, once again! The Nittany Lions made their debut in this season’s AP Top 25 poll, coming in at No. 23.

This marks the first time since the end of the 1995-96 regular season that the Nittany Lions have appeared in an AP poll. We went a little further in-depth on that in our post about what life was like in 1996.

Additionally, PSU cracked the Top 20 in the debut of this season’s NET rankings, coming in at 18th. For those of you who are unfamiliar, the NET replaced the RPI last year as the main metric the NCAA selection committee uses to seed teams and decide which at-large teams on the bubble get in or have their bubble burst. Needless to say, being in the Top 20 is a very good position for the Nittany Lions to find themselves in to start out.
