BSD’s recruiting staff sat down for a roundtable on each prospect Penn State signed in the 2020 class. Coming in at No. 26 was three-star JUCO WR Norval Black.
What makes you excited about Norval Black?
“Black stole the show at camp in Happy Valley over the summer, which is how he earned his offer. He was also a playmaker for Lackawanna C.C. on their way to a JUCO National Championship this past season. While Black does not have elite speed or athleticism, he does have a track record of being a playmaker.” --Marty
What worries you about Norval Black?
“Hand up, I am a hater here, but I’m just not sure I see much more than a deep threat with Black. Which sure, would be helpful for any offense, but it’s not like Black is a plug-and-play JUCO -- as Clay says below, he’s a definite redshirt player due to his frame, and then will only have two seasons to play after that. If Black were a high school player with five years, maybe I’d be more in. But with a shortened timeframe, Black is already behind the eight ball when it comes to getting on the field, and I’m just not sure he’ll ever be much more than Dan Chisena.” --Patrick
Do you think Norval Black will be redshirted next season? Around what point of his career do you think he pushes for meaningful playing time?
“You don’t normally expect a JuCo guy to redshirt, but Black won’t get on campus until the summer and needs to add about 15-20 pounds to hold up at this level. With three years to play two, you’d hope he’s ready for the 2021 season.” --Clay
What is your projection for Norval Black: depth provider, starter, multi-year starter, all-conference, or all-american?
Clay: Depth provider.
Marty: Depth provider.
Patrick: Depth provider.
Lastly, where do you have Norval Black ranked in Penn State’s class?
Clay: 26th
Marty: 25th
Patrick: 27th
