According to High Post Hoops, Sandy Barbour and the Penn State administration has found their new women’s basketball coach. Blake DuDonis is reporting that Penn State plans to hire Carolyn Kieger as the new head coach of the Lady Lions. The 35-year-old Kiegler will replace Coquese Washington who was relieved of her duties on March 8th.
Kieger has spent the past five seasons as the head coach at her alma mater - Marquette. As head coach of Marquette Kieger has put together a 99-64 record. This includes winning at least 24 games each of the past three seasons, while also reaching the NCAA Tournament in each of these seasons.
When she arrives in Happy Valley, Kieger will have a rebuild on her hands. This is something Kieger has experience with. In her first two seasons at Marquette Kieger won just 9 and 14 games. She then turned the Golden Eagles into perennial NCAA Tournament contenders. She also guided the Golden Eagles to their first ever AP top 10 ranking this past season.
The Lady Lions are coming off of a 12-19 season, and have not earned a NCAA Tournament bid since 2014. Hopefully, she can replicate the success she had rebuilding Marquette in Happy Valley.
