A Time to Build The headlines were not kind to Penn State Football last week, but don’t let it distract you that this is the time of year for optimism. Remember, everyone is undefeated and in the hunt for a playoff berth and conference championship. We all know Journey Brown can flat-out fly, but he’s spent his time in State College learning how to be a more complete running back. His efforts should pay off this fall as he sees an increased load in the backfield. Pat Freiermuth proved to be a star-in-the-making as a true freshman, and is ready to become one of the top tight ends in all of college football. Redshirt freshman quarterback Will Levis is ready to lead the Nittany Lions once he’s called upon.
Today’s Specials While special teams units may not get their proper due, a single play can easily dictate the outcome of any game. That was all too obvious for Penn State in 2018 as poor special teams play was a constant. Thankfully, new special teams coach Joe Lorig is bringing a brand-new approach and attitude with him to Happy Valley.
Safety in Numbers One of the hottest position battles of the summer will be the starting safety spot opposite Garrett Taylor. Co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Tim Banks offers some insight on the battle, as well as how Taylor is continuing to develop heading into his senior season.
Game Time Grant Grant Haley quickly went from undrafted free agent to a starter in the New York Giants secondary. He’s looking to hang on to his starting gig in year two, and it sounds like he’s risen to the occasion this offseason. Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be relying on a trio of Nittany Lions to help them turn the corner.
Won’t Ya Marry Me, James? While you didn’t see the OH, HELLO post on BSD, James Franklin picked up one heck of a commitment over the weekend.
WE WANT THE LION It was also a big weekend for the Nittany Lion, who was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame, located in Whitting, Indiana. The Nittany Lion is one of just eight college mascots to receive such an honor.
