HIGHLIGHTS

THE TALE

Penn State has long been interested in Amin Vanover, having offered the 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive lineman in February. Vanover eventually made the trek to Happy Valley for the Blue-White game, but since then things had been quiet between the two sides. As it turns out though, Penn State must have been pushing behind the scenes as Vanover made a surprise commitment earlier tonight, coming on the heels of the Nittany Lions landing a similar jumbo defensive end prospect in Brandon Taylor.

OUTLOOK

So Penn State has five defensive line commitments — Cole Brevard, Fatorma Mulbah, Coziah Izzard, Brandon Taylor, and Amin Vanover — and there is a world where all five could be defensive tackles at the next level. Brevard, Mulbah, and Izzard are for sure interior guys, while tonight’s commits — Taylor and Vanover — could both be easily projected to the inside based on their frame as 17 year olds.

(6-foot-3, 250 pounds for Taylor, while Vanover is 6-foot-4, 260 pounds.)

Is it likely that all five are defensive tackles? No, probably not. My educated guess would be that the coaching staff thinks Taylor can stick on the outside, while Vanover eventually grows into a defensive tackle. He was listed at 240 pounds last fall, and is already up to 260 so if nature takes its course, it would not be surprising if Vanover is enrolling at Penn State around 285 pounds.
