NCAA Football: Fiesta Bowl-Penn State vs Washington Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

With no current Nittany Lion wearing No. 47, let’s remember the career of the former walk-on linebacker Brandon Smith (Stay tuned for perhaps an appearance from the new Brandon Smith in about a month...).

Smith came to Penn State in 2013 and did not see any game action in 2013 or 2014. He appeared in three games in 2015, earning one tackle against Illinois. Smith made his biggest impact in his final two seasons.

In 2016, he played in all 14 games, starting two, including the Michigan game where the Nittany Lions were missing three starting linebackers (Smith himself was lost for the final three quarters of that contest due to a targeting penalty). He registered seven tackles against Minnesota, four against Ohio State, four and an interception against Purdue, and five against Michigan State. Smith did all of this while being named to the Dean’s List in the fall of 2016. In his fifth year of 2017, Smith started four games, including 10 tackles against Rutgers, 13 against Nebraska, and seven in the Fiesta Bowl against Washington. Smith also secured the victory with a fumble recovery in the game’s final moments.
