The current Penn State football player wearing 43 is redshirt sophomore tight end Trevor Baker. Baker came to Penn State in 2017, and after redshirting in his first year, he was named Academic All-Big Ten in 2018.
The Nittany Lions have had a number of successful No. 43s both on and off the field, from Josh Hull, to Adam Taliaferro, but the player that I first watched that donned the numeral was linebacker Brandon Short. Short was the leader of the linebacking corps in the late ‘90s that also included underrated but equally important Mac Morrison and some guy named Lavar Arrington.
The McKeesport native was named Pennsylvania Player of the Year in 1994 before arriving to campus, and anchored the defense throughout his Nittany Lion career alongside Courtney Brown and the aforementioned Arrington. He was named All-American in his final season in 1999, and was drafted by the New York Giants in 2000. Short played seven seasons in the NFL, five of which with the Giants. He is currently a member of the Penn State Board of Trustees and works in London as a part of a real estate investment and asset management firm called Round Hill Capital.
