We should be happy that Journey Brown switched his number during the offseason from 32 to 4. Had he not, then there would still be four days and four weeks remaining before the first Penn State football game of the season. Instead, we are a month closer. Whew.
Brown will be in the mix this season in a loaded backfield, his slight advantage in experience over the younger, very talented young running backs should be enough to secure playing time for the redshirt sophomore.
Brown’s journey from Meadville to State College was just three hours by car but where it leads from here is anyone’s guess. The 5’11 206-pound speedster first caught the eye of James Franklin and his staff when he ran a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash in the summer before his senior year of high school, while at a Penn State football camp.
There is no doubt that Journey is fast, but so far he has shown that he can also finish runs for positive yardage. He has just 8 rushing attempts and one reception to his tally so far, and is averaging 5.5 yards per carry, with his longest rush just 8 yards, his lone reception was for 9. While he is seen as a potential home-run hitter, and we may see that this season, in the brief time he has had on the field, he has shown a willingness to hit the hole and take what is there.
We gave Journey a brief shout-out just before the Ohio State game last season but he was not a factor in that game. This year, things might be different.
Just four more days until kickoff!
