When Shaka Toney announced he would return for his senior year, he never could have imagined the bumps in the road as he prepares for his last season as a Nittany Lion. However, what once looked to be a lost cause is now on the horizon - the start of the 2020 Penn State Football season.
Toney returns as the elder statesmen of the Nittany Lion defensive line, entering his fourth season as a regular at defensive end. The Philadelphia product is coming off his most productive season in Happy Valley, contributing 6.5 sacks, 8 TFLs, 40 total tackles and a fumble recovery. Toney’s ability to disrupt the offense were easily apparent to coaches throughout the Big Ten, who named him as an all-conference second-team pick in 2019, with many outlets naming him as a first-team preseason selection heading into the fall.
Toney arrived in State College as a raw, undersized speed rusher. Through his dedication and work ethic, he will leave Penn State as one of the all-around best defensive linemen in the conference with a bright future of playing on Sundays. But first - go make those Big Ten quarterbacks suffer this fall, Shaka.
