We’ve all seen the news that the Big Ten may cancel or delay the fall football season, but until an official announcement is made, our countdown persists!
The number 26 has risen quite a bit in popularity with the ascent of Saquon Barkley to superstardom both at Penn State and now with the New York Giants. It’s the easy choice to select a man that is in second place all-time in rushing at Penn State, and provided countless highlight reel plays. However, we try to select a current Nittany Lion who wears the jersey if they have seen the field.
Now that the disclaimer is out of the way...
Current running back and true freshman Caziah Holmes wears the number on offense, but safety Jonathan Sutherland gets the well-deserved feature for our countdown.
The redshirt junior came to Penn State as a four-star safety from Episcopal High School in Virginia. He had offers from Michigan, Miami, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, and several other ACC and Big Ten schools. After redshirting in 2017, Sutherland appeared in 13 games in 2018, with his first career start coming on the road at Iowa. He was a team captain in 2019 and blocked two punts against Idaho.
Sutherland is not only an impact player on the field, but is an excellent student, having earned Dean’s List in the spring of 18. He is a man of exemplary character and the secondary, and team as a whole, is fortunate to have him back in 2020.
26 days. Please. 26 days.
