Less than 24 hours before signing day in February, 2015, Kevin Givens made the wise choice to flip his commitment from Pitt to Penn State. Givens would then spend four years on campus, having a pretty under-appreciated career for the Nittany Lions.
Givens finished his career with 83 tackles, 22 tackles for a loss, 13.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and 3 fumble recoveries. He also finished with 4 pass breakups, which is pretty remarkable for a defensive tackle. Givens was masterful at reading and blowing up screen plays, could rush the passer from the interior of the defensive line, and could play on the outside against run heavy offenses.
Following his redshirt junior year in 2018, Givens surprised a lot of people by declaring for the NFL Draft. He is now a member of the San Francisco 49ers, having spent time on both their practice squad and active roster last season.
At times last season the Penn State defensive line would struggle to consistently rush the passer, especially from the interior of the defensive line. That was an area where Givens was sorely missed.
