THE HIGHLIGHTS
THE TALE
Players committing to Penn State on game days in Happy Valley has been a trend this season. Saturday afternoon it continued with the addition of three-star tight end Joey Schlaffer. Schlaffer becomes the 4th member of Penn State’s 2023 recruiting class and second in-state member of the class.
Schlaffer visited Penn State for their home opener against Ball State on September 11th and left with an offer. He returned for a visit for the White Out victory over Auburn, as well as being on campus when he committed on Saturday afternoon.
Once the Nittany Lions offered Schlaffer him joining the class appeared to be a question of when not if. That day has come and Schalffer has become the first tight end commit in a class where the Nittany Lions will likely shoot for two tight ends.
OUTLOOK
Schlaffer is a bit of a project at tight end. He has good frame and build for the tight end position, but needs to add a good amount of weight to his current 205 pound frame. There is little doubt that this will happen when het gets into Dwight Galt’s weight program.
If Schlaffer adds to his frame after a redshirt year and likely another developmental year, he could become a solid tow-way tight end of the Nittany Lions. Worst case scenario he should be a solid pass catching threat at tight end.
