HIGHLIGHTS
THE TALE
Originally out of Northeast High School in Philadelphia, the home of current Penn State staff member and former Nittany Lion defensive end Deion Barnes, Mills opted for the JUCO route out of high school, heading to Lackawanna Community College.
The 2020 high school grad was able to play just two games for the Falcons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but impressed in limited action for a program that has become known for producing high level defensive backs in recent years.
OUTLOOK
Getting any sort of read on this one right now is tough. Mills has the physical tools, at 6-foot, 205 pounds, to be a high level safety at the college level, but it’s hard to say where he’s at from a skill standpoint.
This feels like a recruitment where we could look back in a couple of years and say that Penn State did a shrewd job getting in on the ground floor.
The Lack has produced high level defensive backs in each of the last three recruiting cycles in Jaquan Brisker, Jy’Ayir Brown and most recently De’Jahn Warren and it seems like Mills could well be the next in line there.
Without much 2020 game tape, its no surprise he’s yet to be rated on any of the major recruiting sites and only lists one significant offer, with that coming from the Nittany Lions. But Penn State’s close proximity to LCC and the connections between the coaching staffs would lead one to believe James Franklin and company have a pretty good read on this one, and could be taking advantage of that situation to land a prospect that will end up highly rated by the time the recruiting cycle ends.
