2022 Official Signing Day Recruiting Thread Weeeeeeeee!!!!

New post, ya'll. The Comments section gets locked out after 30 days, so I just need to start a new thread every month or so. So here we are.

James Franklin was right some years ago when he predicted that the Early Signing Day would simply become the new signing day. We have no prospects left on the board, and the amount of uncommitted prospects still on the board overall is negligible. So, for 2022, there isn't much left to discuss in terms of Penn State recruiting.

One discussion I wanted to keep alive, however, was the NIL issue I brought up on the previous thread. If you missed, it centered around reports that Texas A&M boosters organized an NIL campaign to dish out in excess of $25-$30 million to obtain it's current #1 ranked recruiting class for 2022 (and one of the greatest recruiting classes of all time) for a school who lost 4 games this year and hasn't won a conference championship in over 20 years. Link to Story

I guess the question is, does Penn State have boosters doing this behind the scenes right now? Should they be? (if we want to be legitimate contenders?) Would this bother you? What effect will this have on college football as a whole?

In any event, without further ado.....

2023 BIG BOARD

Estimated takes at each position in parenthesis. Commits in italics.

QB (1)

5* Dante Moore – 6’2 195lbs prospect out of MLK in Detroit (same HS as current PSU S Jaylen Reed). Top 4 schools are Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and the Good Guys. Strong arm, accurate, extremely mobile but is clearly a pass-first player. Good comps would be Caleb Williams (OU) and Bryce Young (Bama).

4* Jaden Rashada – 6’4 180lbs out of California. Top schools include ASU, UCLA, Penn State, Auburn, and Ole Miss. Bigger guy, but still a slight frame with room to fill out. Very mobile and nice touch on intermediate throws. Good comp. is CJ Stroud.

Notes: After bringing in a 5* QB in the 2022 cycle (Allar) and Pribula, we can afford to be a little selective. The top two targets are either a 5* or borderline 5*

RB (1-2)

4* Treyaun Webb – 6’1 190lbs out of Jacksonville, FL. He unofficially visited PSU in November for the Michigan game while committed to Oklahoma, and recently opened up his commitment. We’ll see if PSU gets back in the running.

4* Marquese Williams – 5’10 185lbs out of Harrisburg, PA. Has been offered and Visited PSU in September

4* Mark Fletcher - 6'1 225lbs - American Heritage (FL) prospect. Big and physically imposing. Andrew Ivins of 247 lists Derrick Henry as his NFL comp. I don't know that he's quite that big or athletic, though. Considering Miami, among others, but visited PSU in November 2021.

4* Ike Daniels – 5’10 185lbs out of Stafford Virginia. PSU offered back in Nov. 2019 during his only visit but he hasn’t returned since. No crystal balls yet.

Notes: Similar to QB, with two backs taken in 2022 and a loaded RB room, the staff will likely be selective this cycle.

WR (3-4)

4* Rodney Gallagher 5’11 160lbs– Recently decided he would be playing football in college (he’s also a very good basketball player). Extremely athletic and he can play wide receiver or safety at the collegiate level. I’ll list him at wide receiver for now.

4* Noah Rogers, 6'1 180lbs - NC prospect. Leaning toward NC State but has visited PSU recently and is a top target.

4* WR Ejani Shakir (NJ) – 6'0 175lbs prospect out of Pennsauken. PSU recently made his top group. (courtesy of C.McKean)

3* Kenny Johnson – 6’2 190lbs out of Dallastown, PA. All crystal balls point to PSU at this point. Hearing he might be a diamond in the rough type player, which it’s hard to be when you’re already a 3-star and #420 overall nationally, but might still be underrated.

3* Lamar Patterson – 5’9 171lbs out of St. Frances. Offered by PSU on December 1. Much smaller in statute, and a low-end three-star player at this point (.8416 composite rating). They must have seen something on tape/in person that they really like, or the staff continues to try and make inroads with St. Frances in Baltimore where they’ve repeatedly come up short.

Notes: We’ve offered plenty of players (37), but I haven’t seen much chatter on anyone else. This also isn’t a position of huge need this cycle.

TE (1-2)

4* Mathias Barnwell – 6’5 250lbs Committed. From Fredericksburg, VA. After originally committing, then de-committing, Barnwell is back in the fold for 2023. Some question as to whether he stays at Tight End or shifts to OT.

3* Joey Schlaffer – 6’6 205lbs – Committed. From Reading, PA. Big athletic kid with big frame that he needs to grow into.

4* Andrew Rappleyea - 6'4 215 lbs prospect out of Milton Academy in Mass. If Barnwell is shifted to OT, Rappleyea will fill this slot

Notes: With Barnwell and Sclaffer in the fold, we're probably done with TE recruiting for the cycle already.

OL (4-5)

5* Alex Birchmeier – 6’5 275lbs – Committed. #1 Offensive Tackle and #32 overall player nationally out of Ashburn, VA. Great job by Coach Trautwein to lock in a Virginia player this early. He’s been all PSU on his twitter feed and seems 100%.

3* Joshua Miller 6'5 320 lbs - Committed - Out of Life Christian Academy in Virginia. Projects as an interior lineman. Committed over offers from Clemson, UNC, and VaTech.

4* Antonio Tripp – 6’3 300lbs – McDonough HS (Md) prospect (same as PJ, Ellies, Curtis Jacobs) who has visited PSU 3 times in the last 6 months. All crystal balls currently point to PSU.

4* Luke Montgomery – 6’5 260lbs out of Findlay in Ohio. Likely to become a Buckeye according to his crystal ball (not surprising) but we’ve made a push recently, with the coaching staff visiting him in the week following the last game of the season.

4* Jven Williams – 6’4 285lbs out of Reading, PA. He was offered on an unofficial visit to State College on September 25, 2021. Since then, the offers have come rolling in from the likes of Ole Miss, West Va., South Carolina, MSU, and others.

4* Samson Okunlola - 6'5 295lbs out Massachusetts. Visiting PSU in January. Top50 player with major national offers.

3* JaSire Peterson - 6'4 270lbs out of Union City (NJ)(Steven Gonzalez's alma mater if I'm not mistaken) Decommitted from Rutgers in January 2022 after being committed for almost a full year. Will visit PSU for one of their January Junior days.

3* Evan Link - 6'5 270lbs out of D.C. (Gonzaga)

Notes: Lots of O-line offers out there. tough to guage player/staff interest with so many offers and visits. JUCO prospects may also factor in as they have in prior seasons. This will be an evolving position group. Suggestions welcome.

DL (4-6)

4* Neeo Avery - Committed - 6'5 230lbs out of Good Counsel (MD) – Huge pickup. Had offers from Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Michigan. Will likely play DE in college but could move to Tight End as well.

5* Nyckoles Harbor – 6’5 225lbs. Out of Archbishop Carroll in D.C. Likely a defensive end in college. Has visited PSU twice in 6 months, but was 100% crystal balled to OU before Lincoln Riley left, and to no one’s surprise, was just offered by USC. Also has interest in Maryland, Mich. Oregon, and was just offered by Ohio State.

4* Jason Moore – 6’6 255lbs Defensive end from DeMatha (Md.) Was a really good basketball player, but I believe is opting to play football. Visited PSU in September, and we’ve had some previous success with DeMatha

4* Ta’Mere Robinson – 6’4 210 lbs defensive end out of Brashear in Pittsburgh. Has visited PSU 4 times in the last 6 months. No crystal balls yet, and has offers from Texas, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and Ohio State among others.

4* Sydir Mitchell – 6’5 324lb BIG DT out of Bergen Catholic. Visited PSU twice in the last 6 months, but has offers from Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Michigan. We’ve really struggled with Bergen Catholic recruits, so we’ll see if we can break the trend. No crystal balls yet.

4* Cameron Lenhardt - 6'2 240lbs out of NJ – currently is at IMG but transferring back to NJ for next season. He’s visited 3 times while at IMG.

4* Dylan Gooden - 6'6' 204lbs out of Md. (Good Counsel).

3* Mason Robinson – 6’3 230lbs out of McDonough. Visited PSU in September, but also has interest from Tennesse, OU, and West Virginia.

3* Jameial Lyons 6'5 220lbs out of Roman Catholic in Philly – Bid time athlete who visited a number of times and camped with PSU in 2021.*

NR Joseph Mupoyi – 6’5 210lbs from Carroll in D.C., same school has Harbor (above). Under the rsadar player, for now, as 24/7 doesn’t have a ranking on him, but he’s garnered offers from PSU, Maryland, Ole Miss, and Miami in the last few months.

Notes: 46 offers out to D-Lineman so far. This is just a sampling for now, and will be added to as the cycle goes on and visits continue.

LB (2-4)

4* Josiah Trotter – 6’2 225 lbs prospect out of St. Joe’s Prep in Philly. Son of former Eagles Jeremiah Trotter. His brother, Jeremiah Jr., is a freshman at Clemson, and he has also been offered by Clemson, and has interest from Ohio State. Has visited PSU a bunch, but we’ll see if we can keep him from heading to Death valley to play with big bro.

4* Phil Picciotti – 6’3 225 lbs prospect from Perkasie, PA. Extremely quick and athletic. Possible relation to former CB West/Pitt monster RB Dustin Picciotti? Has racked up offers recently, including OU, South Carolina, and Notre Dame, and even visited Oklahoma (pre-Lincoln Riley departure).

4* Jordan Hall – 6’2 225lbs out of IMG Academy (formerly of Fredericksburg, VA). Visited PSU in October, and Miami in June (I mention this for no particular reason at all). Also has interest from UNC, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

4* Semaj Bridgeman – 6’2 220lbs out of Archbishop Wood (PA). Visited PSU twice in 6 months. Has offers from Florida, Michigan, and MSU.

4* Grant Tucker - 6'3 185lbs out of North Carolina. Visited PSU in September 2021. Also plays wide reciever and may project as a safety depending on development. *

3* Tony Rojas - 6'2 200lbs our of Fairfax HS (VA) – PSU was probably the favorite pre-coaching change so we will see what Diaz thinks and Pry at VT will make this harder. He looks great at LB. Similar to Curtis Jacobs, also a P5 level WR recruit. Has visited 3 times, two of which have come in Fall 2021.*

CB (2-3)

4* Lamont Payne – Committed – 6’1 170lbs PA prospect out of Chartiers Valley HS in Bridgeville. #8 player in PA and #31 CB overall.

3* Shawn Battle – 5’11 175lbs out of Neumann-Goretti in Philly. Has offers/interest from Virginia, Oregon, B.C., Ole Miss, and Nebraska, among others.

3* Antonio Cotman – 6’1 185lbs out of Life Christian Academy. Teammate of OL Joshua Miller. Visited PSU in November. Very athletic and could play multiple spots in the secondary. Has interest and offers from Purdue and B.C.

S (2-3)

4* Rahmir Stewart – 6’0 195lbs safety prospect from Ihmotep in Philly. We’ve had mixed success with ‘Tep prospects. Keon Wylie and Shaka Toney come to mind, but also not being in the running for Enai White this cycle also sticks out. We’ll see if we can pull in Wylie’s teammate, or if he goes the way of White in seeking southern pastures. Offers include Clemson, Texas A&M, Michigan, and LSU (pre-Chip Brian Kelly)

4* Khalil Ali – 6’1 190 lbs out of Pennsauken, NJ. Has also visited PSU twice in 6 months.

4* Cam Seldon - 6'1 210 lbs Virginia prospect being recruited by COach Poindexter. Could also play receiver.

3* Moussa Kane - 6'1 175lbs - Blair Academy (NJ) prospect, which is the alma mater of Odafe Oweh. Visited PSU and Sept. and Nov. 2021 and his brother played for Coach Poindexter at Purdue, so there's a relationship there.*
