Go Falcons!

Many of you know that I have other rooting interests in the CFB world, specifically the MAC. My oldest son just graduated from Bowling Green last spring after spending four years in the Falcon Marching Band. My youngest son is a freshman at BG. My middlest son is a chemical engineering major at Miami University. With the onset of midweek MACtion games, I will be in Oxford on Tuesday evening to watch the Battle of the Bricks between Ohio and Miami. Then I will make the trip up I-75 to watch Kent State and Bowling Green. My wife has not yet decided if I am using football games as an excuse to visit my kids, or if I'm using my kids as an excuse to go to football games. But I digress.

It's the Bowling Green game I want to discuss. They are currently tied for first in the MAC East with Buffalo and Ohio, having lost to Buffalo already. But they have a shot at bowl eligibility for the first time since 2015 when Dino Babers led them to a MAC championship. Since 2018, when my oldest enrolled, this team has been horribad which means he never got to experience going on a bowl trip with the band, something I took for granted in my Blue Band days. They've had their moments but have been very inconsistent. To wit, last year they go on the road and beat Minnesota (with Tanner Morgan, I might add), then inexplicably lose a home game to Akron in blow-out fashion. This year, they lost to FCS Eastern Kentucky in 7OT, after squandering many opportunities to put the game away, then turn around and beat a good Marshall team that was fresh off a win against the Irish. They have struggled to play complimentary football and they commit a lot of penalties (most penalized team in FBS). Not only is it a lot of penalties but it always seems to be critically dumb penalties at the absolute worst time, like dead ball personal fouls that keep drives alive. I've been convinced for a while that BG Football is simply afraid of success.

Getting back to their bowl eligibility, the game on Wednesday may be their best chance to get that 6th win. Kent State has been near the top of the MAC for a couple of seasons now but seem to be down this year. BG finishes the season with road games at Ohio and at Toledo, first place in MAC West and arch-rival. To have a shot at the MAC championship probably requires too much chaos. So, my fellow BSDers, if you can find it within yourselves to root for the brown and orange on Wednesday night, I'd be grateful.

BG comes to Happy Valley in '25 or '26. As a family we will have a lot of fun with that.
