NCAA Hockey Tourney!!!

Just throwing this stuff up here so I can access the links whenever I need them -- if they help any of the commentariat, that's an extra bonus!!

Penn State men's hockey starts the NCAA Hockey Tournament and the road to the Frozen Four this Friday, March 24, 2023, at 5:00 PM in the PPL Center in Allentown, PA!!! The game is on ESPNU. Penn State is the #2 seed in the Allentown Region (and the host team as well!), and they play Michigan Tech in this first round game Friday night.

Extraneous information for better or worse... The NCAA seeding committee had to seed the following number of teams from each conference:

  • 4 Big Ten teams
  • 4 ECAC teams
  • 3 NCHC teams
  • 2 CCHA teams
  • 2 Hockey East teams
  • 1 Atlantic Hockey team

And the committee had to seed around their top four seeds which are each placed in their own region: Minnesota (B10), Quinnipiac (ECAC), Denver (NCHC) and Michigan (B10). What that means is despite the committee's best efforts (some would suggest those efforts may not have been very good!), Penn State got seeded in Michigan's bracket. What would have been nice is if every B10 team had been in a separate region. 4 B10 teams, 4 regions, makes sense, right? Apparently the committee couldn't figure out a way to send a B10 team to the Manchester, NH region. The result is that when Penn State beats Michigan Tech on Friday, their likely opponent in Sunday's second round game will be Michigan. PSU is 1-3 against Michigan this season, so that's not ideal. But, as they say, if you want to take home the trophy you eventually have to beat everyone! For what it's worth, Harvard (an ECAC team) got seeded in the same bracket as conference foe Quinnipiac, and Western Michigan (an NCHC team) got seeded in the same bracket as conference foe Denver. So, Penn State is not alone in this situation.

Anyway, it's time for Guy and the guys to play some outstanding hockey!! On to Allentown!! Beat Michigan Tech!!!
