That’s the sound that comes to mind when I think of the 2023 bowl season.
A big ol’ stanky fart noise.
Let’s start with the fact that Penn State got laughed out of the Peach Bowl, 38-25, in a game that was not as close as the score would indicate. Ole Miss ran roughshod over the Lions, whose defense was without Manny Diaz, Chop Robinson, Kalen King, and Johnny Dixon, among others. Such a deflating loss leaves many feeling pretty poopy about the team, the complete inverse of this time last year, when the Lions were riding high off a Rose Bowl win over Utah.
Elsewhere, both Rutgers and Maryland won their bowl games, defeating Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl and Auburn in the Music City Bowl, respectively. Penn State is “unrivaled” but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t sting seeing those two teams have success when PSU fell flat.
Not B1G-related, but Florida State getting shunned for the playoff so the almighty SEC wouldn’t get rightfully left out, in favor of Texas and Bama is abhorrent.
Add in Michigan winning the natty, proving cheaters don’t just win but actively prosper, and I’m just left feeling rather disgusted by this year’s bowl season.
Now, it’s not all bad news. Ohio State pulled a Penn State against Mizzou, with many of their star players sitting out, and ultimately losing in the Cotton Bowl. Tennessee blanked Iowa in the Citrus Bowl, a beauty to behold.
So, yes, there were a few things to look at as glimmers of joy amongst the despair. But those are rather Pyrrhic victories, and I’m left sitting here in January disgruntled.
Only 7 months until the 2024 season!
