Immanuel Iyke didn’t play a lot of football for Penn State in 2016, but he sure did look awesome holding the American flag before the Military Appreciation Game against Iowa last November. That evening was only made more meaningful for Iyke and his teammates because the Penn State defensive tackle came to the school after serving nearly five years in the Marine Corps.
As a redshirt freshman last season, Iyke made his debut in the regular season finale against Michigan State, but his most memorable appearance was that night in November when he proudly represented the United States military before the Lions crushed their opponents, 41-14.
Since today is Memorial Day, it’s important to remember that not all veterans get a college football scholarship when they’re done serving our country. Too many men and women that sacrifice so much end up getting so little in return. The least we can do to honor this country’s bravest citizens is to give them a shout out on this lovely day.
So here’s a big thank you to Iyke and all the other veterans out there. You are truly awesome and the United States wouldn’t be great without you!
