Only Tyler Davis Until Penn State Football 2017

He’s not Penn State’s most viral kicker, but we like him a lot anyway.

By converting on 22 of 24 field goal attempts in 2016, Tyler Davis established himself as one of the top kickers in Penn State history. His 62 extra-point makes are matched only by Brett Conway in 1994, and his 22 field goals are only two behind the 24 that Sam Ficken hit in 2014. The big difference is that even the heroic Ficken needed 29 attempts to nail that record.

You can make the argument that Davis, a former Bradley University soccer player who walked on at Penn State in his sophomore season of 2014, is the greatest Nittany Lion kicker of all time. He’ll get a chance to cement his legacy as such in 2017 as part of a team that is expected to light up scoreboards across the Midwest.

Unlike Ficken, who started his Penn State career as a woefully inaccurate kicker, field goals seemed to always come easy for Davis. He first saw action during the 2015 campaign when it became apparent that Joey Julius might be better utilized if he focused on kickoffs and bulldozing opposing kick returners. Davis went a perfect 8-for-8 that season to earn full-time field goal duties in 2016. The rest is history.
